People are at the heart of everything we do - on stage, in the community, and behind the scenes. In our Meet the Team blog series, we introduced you to the brilliant individuals shaping our day-to-day activity. Now, we’re turning the spotlight onto our Board of Trustees - a group of passionate, skilled, and committed individuals who help guide and support the strategic direction of our organisation.
A Shared Vision, Strengthened by Diverse Perspectives
Our Trustees bring a wealth of experience across creative arts, education, youth work, governance, business development, and social impact. They are united by a shared commitment to Barbican Theatre’s values — People Focussed, Respect, Inclusivity, Integrity, Ambition, and Collaboration.
From policy and placemaking to grassroots engagement, our trustees offer unique perspectives that help us remain rooted in our community while navigating change and reaching towards bold ambitions. Together, they play a vital role in ensuring our work is ethical, impactful, and resilient.
Meet Our Trustees:
- Amanda Lee – Co-Chair: With over 15 years of experience in marketing, Amanda is the Marketing Manager for Simpleview. She brings extensive knowledge of destination marketing and has a strong network within Plymouth. Passionate about the creative industries, Amanda advocates for opportunities for young people and cultural events that enrich the city.
- Gina Small – Trustee: Gina, as a Chartered Project Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, brings a wealth of strategic leadership, proven project delivery expertise, and a commitment to excellence that drives transformative outcomes to deliver change. Gina is a Senior Project Manager for the National Trust; she’s passionate about sustainable growth and creating inclusive spaces for meaningful participation for the people of Plymouth.
- Robin Tatam – Co-Chair: Robin’s connection to Plymouth began with submarines, but the city quickly became both a family home and a base for his international business ventures. A long-standing supporter of Barbican Theatre, Robin first fell in love with its bold, alternative spirit when the bar was still in The Fisherman’s Arms! He previously chaired the organisation through a major revamp, championing its education and community theatre work. Robin brings his wealth of experience and enduring passion for creative enterprise. He continues to be inspired by the team’s ability to reimagine and lead in challenging times, seeing Barbican Theatre as a vital cultural beacon for Plymouth and beyond.
- Stuart Tulloch-Thomas – Trustee: Stu, Headteacher of a large Primary School in Plymouth, brings over 20 years of leadership experience in education. A member of the LGBTQ+ community, Stu advocates for creating inclusive spaces for young people to express themselves through the arts. He’s also passionate about leading an active lifestyle; including coaching weekly indoor cycle classes, playing tennis and running half marathons across Europe.
Our trustees' collective expertise and dedication are instrumental in steering Barbican Theatre towards a vibrant and sustainable future, where creativity thrives, and community connections are strengthened.
Introducing Our Co-Chair Model
This year, we’ve introduced a co-chair model, marking a shift towards more inclusive and shared leadership at board level. Our co-chairs - Robin Tatam and Amanda Lee - bring complementary skills and experiences, creating space for more collaborative decision-making and a deeper understanding of the communities we serve.
By distributing leadership, we’re not only building greater capacity and resilience but also modelling the kind of collaborative, people-focussed approach that underpins our work across the organisation.
Why it Matters
Our Board helps ensure Barbican Theatre remains a space where creative risk, community voice, and inclusive leadership can thrive. The introduction of the co-chair model is just one of the ways we’re evolving to better reflect the world we live in - and the values we stand for.
By widening participation at board level and embracing shared leadership, we’re building greater capacity, deeper understanding, and more connected governance — all in service of our artists, young creatives, audiences, and communities.
