With Daisy Harrison & Harry Scott

This is a youth training opportunity for young contemporary dancers aged 15-25 years, who are looking  to develop their contemporary dance experience. Some of you may want to prepare for further dance training, some of you may want to simply challenge your body and creativity to advance yourself as a dancer.

The weekly classes provides high quality contemporary dance training for young people to develop, create and perform – challenging themselves as young dancers and creators. Whilst the company specialises in contemporary dance, the company stays true to the Barbican’s ethos of providing a safe and supportive environment where each dancer is free to experiment with multiple different art forms alongside their training. These opportunities to work collaboratively with other art forms will push dancers out of their comfort zones, as well as create another opportunity for the dancers to express themselves and develop in skills they may not have previously considered.

Whilst working cohesively as a company, this training opportunity also provides the space to focus on each individual dancer. Working throughout the year on building confidence, a creative voice and establishing strengths through individual coaching, we aim to empower each individual to make decisions about how to pursue further artistic training or work. We acknowledge that our dancers aim to pursue a wide range of career paths, and that their goals may shift while training. We support all dancers in whichever route they may take.

When are sessions?

Guest Workshop with Freya Simpson from Ceyda Tanc Dance

Ceyda Tanc Dance produce unique and dynamic contemporary dance works with influence from Turkish folk dance. We take pride in celebrating cultural diversity in dance and the community, with emphasis on how traditional dances can be incorporated into contemporary forms. Our workshops are fast-paced and challenging, giving an insight into the company’s process, and developing the performance and physical skills of young dancers. Our youth dance alumni have gone on to train at internationally renowned conservatoires including, London Contemporary Dance School, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Laban and Institute of the Arts Barcelona.

The session is led by Freya Simpson, a graduate of Rambert School and company member and teacher for Ceyda Tanc Dance since 2017

Prior to moving to Brighton, Freya trained at Rambert School, graduating with a BA (Hons) in 2017; here she performed work by Darren Ellis and Robert Cohan as well as performing Mark Baldwin’s The Creation, at Sadler’s Wells alongside Rambert Company.

Freya has been involved in numerous projects and has collaborated with artists from Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College. Freya performs with The Yonis, a female contemporary movement band who are resident artists for Woman SRSLY and is a dancer with Chrysalis London.
