Celebrating the street culture surrounding the Modified Car Scene.
Barbican Theatre has been creating the party of the summer: with over 50 professional, semi pro and community performers.
Barbican Theatre’s PETROL HEADZ ON TOUR showcases the street culture surrounding the modified car scene. Featuring sound systems, parkour stunts, modified cars, dancers, DJs and MC battles – our show is energetic, exciting and fun!
As part of the next wave of PETROL HEADZ ON TOUR there will be shows at Thê Depø Venue club on 25 and 26 August, a club night afterparty at Thê Depø with platinum selling Charlotte DeVaney headlining and free shows for families on Saturday 28 August at the City Centre Piazza. This bumper final week is all about high energy shows celebrating nightlife, modified cars, street culture and the unique talents that Plymouth has to offer.
“I’m really excited about performing at PETROL HEADZ and seeing the music I curated come to life ! It’s such a unique concept that everyone is gonna love!” Charlotte Devaney

Featuring show cars from around the Plymouth area and with gravity defying stunts from Plymouth Parkour, we’ll draw you into a world of Drum n Bass and DJ battles, dance parties and drift car footage and take you on a journey into our love affair with the modified car scene. Steve Hughes, Chief Executive Plymouth City Centre Company who commissioned the City Centre Piazza PETROL HEADZ events says
“We are delighted to support this exciting event in the city centre which we hope will attract a new audience and enliven the city centre. The previous show in July drew huge crowds and this extended version looks to be even more packed with energy and entertainment for everyone. It’s definitely something not to be missed.”
PETROL HEADZ is the brainchild of Barbican Theatre’s CEO Laura Kriefman who wanted to bring dance, live music, modified car and street scenes together to create something unique for Plymouth.
“I’ve been obsessed with the artistry of the modified car scene and all the surrounding street culture for years. I love the precision movement displayed by drifters, and speedway riders. I can’t get enough airkit and hydraulics cars and the technical skills behind it. I love the brilliance of the neon underlighting, epic vinyl wrapping and that’s before you add in the soundsystem culture that goes with it!
I grew up going to Monster Truck shows and steam ups with my mum – it was inevitable that I was going to want to make a show about cars – they’re much more nimble than dockyard cranes! Who wouldn’t want to see immaculately designed cars, amongst kickass dancers and parkour tricksters, all accompanied by some absolute tunes?”

Despite the disruption of Covid-19, and the unsuitability of doing the larger scale show this summer- we wanted to make sure we showcased the amazing talent and passions in Plymouth.
Over the summer we will have created 18 performances for Petrol Headz on tour- from Skate nights, to performing at car meets, to Club nights and free performance in the centre of Plymouth. So far we have performed to over 2,200 people.
Barbican has employed over 54 local artists, creatives, event crew and freelancers from the industry.
We’ve offered 4 paid internships in choreography and production management.
We have over 50 young people performing in the show and getting work alongside professional dancers. All of which feels particularly important after the past 18 months where their lives have seen so much disruption.
We’re proud of the new creative voices that we’re giving a platform to in Plymouth.
This is the first stage of a long term collaboration with the car scene and surrounding street culture and world class movement talent in Plymouth. We are also very excited to not be able to tell you about the next iteration that will be globally available in January 2022. Watch this space!

It is very important to Barbican Theatre that events such as PETROL HEADZ ON TOUR are accessible and inclusive to all. That’s why tickets for the THÊ DEPØ shows are Pay What You Decide – audiences don’t have to pay anything up front when they book their tickets. Then once they’ve seen the show they can pay what they want to or what they can afford (which can still be nothing)
Jo Cann, Barbican Theatre’s Marketing & Communications Manager says
“Pay What You Decide allows people to pay what they can afford, rather than a fixed ticket price, so they can take a risk, try watching something new, and encounter stories they’ve not heard before. This might be their first opportunity to step inside a venue. It’s about removing barriers”.
