Barbican Theatre Plymouth is proud to announce a theatrical experience celebrating the life and art of one of the UK’s most iconic painters – and one of Plymouth’s most cherished cultural figures – Beryl Cook.

BERYL COOK: A PRIVATE VIEW offers audiences a unique opportunity to step inside the vibrant world of Beryl’s paintings, while uncovering the story of the remarkably private woman behind the brush. Her instantly recognisable, exuberant works – capturing everyday life in pubs, on shopping trips, or dancing the night away – have delighted generations across the globe.

Beryl spent much of her life in Plymouth, where the people and places she encountered daily provided inspiration for her joyful, larger-than-life characters. This special connection makes Barbican Theatre the perfect home for this wonderful production – and we anticipate a great deal of local and national interest.

Audiences will watch as ‘Beryl’ creates one of her playful oil paintings live on stage, with her private thoughts and reflections unfolding in real time. Written by Kara Wilson, in close collaboration with Beryl’s family, the script offers rare insight into the artist’s life and creative process.

Kara Wilson’s fifth play exploring the lives of visual artists, BERYL COOK: A PRIVATE VIEW follows critically acclaimed productions that have toured to galleries, auction houses and theatres across Scotland, England, Poland, and New York.  Speaking about the project, Kara said:

Since I started work on the script with Beryl’s son John and he drove me around Plymouth showing me the Dolphin, the Hoe, the Cook guest house in Atheneum Street - all the places important to Beryl, I have been determined that I celebrate her wonderful talent and fascinating character in this city she loved and made her own.”
