We are thrilled to be one of 38 (and counting) venues across the UK who are getting involved with Playwrights Flashmob. This is an initiative born from Support Playwrights - a group of established theatre artists keen to support emerging playwrights in these tough times. They asked emerging playwrights about the concerns and needs in this questionnaire - here you can read the answers.
Playwright and our Artistic Consultant Laura Horton will be holding space from 11am - 2pm on 2nd July 2024 in The B-Bar at the Barbican Theatre
Our theatre cafe and auditorium will be open to any playwrights who wish to attend the Playwrights Flashmob on the 2nd July from 11am to 2pm. There will be space to sit and chat and work with fellow playwrights. This action has been designed to be a relaxed and informal way to meet other playwrights in your area and hopefully find a few hours in your week to feel part of a community.
One of the biggest challenges facing emerging playwrights today is a sense that doors are closed to them and they don't know who to approach at their local theatre.
For more information about Support Playwrights have a look at the Substack. Here you can also read the minutes from their first meeting at the Royal Court theatre on 5th June 24. The Playwrights Flashmob page has basic info about the event and a list of venues involved.
There will also be an online version of the event run by Paines Plough. Details here.
