Thur 14 Jan 2021 ‘What am I worth?’ Finances for self employed creatives with Jon Aitken 6pm – 7:30pm via Zoom

Jon Aitken is a freelance filmmaker and photographer based in Bristol. With a background in journalism and marketing, he has spent six years creating content for arts organisations and businesses, as well as working on projects in South Korea and Japan. He now documents people and events around the UK.

In this masterclass Jon will talk about his own journey from working for somebody else to self-employment, how he has balanced the two and the pitfalls along the way. He’ll also be discussing day rates, what it means to run your own business in the creative industries, and sharing tips on how to avoid stress when it’s time to submit your tax return.

Thur 21 Jan 2021: Building a career in music whilst living in the South West with Maddy V and Benny Lau-Crispin (P) 6pm – 7:30pm via Zoom 

Can you ignore the call of London and still carve out a career for yourself in the music industry? What are the pros and cons of living in the South West and what led our panellists, Maddy V and Benny Lau-Crispin to base their careers in the Plymouth area?

Maddy V is a multi-genre MC and musician,  and is part of the Bristol based label Sikastudios

Benny Lau Crispin is a Director of Milk Box Music Group Ltd. Based at their recording studio ‘The Granary Studio’ in Callington Cornwall, the company has grown to offer a range of services from music engineering and recording, production tuition, record label management, distribution and promotion services aimed at up and coming musicians and producers from all over the South West. He has toured Europe and many of the biggest festivals performing in acts such as Panda and Two Tribes and his music has been signed to some of the worlds leading dance music labels including Toolroom, Anjuna Deep and Love & Other.

Thu 28 Jan 2021: Tech 102 – An introduction to Theatre Tech part 2 with Nathan Benjamin (T) 6pm – 7:30pm via Zoom webinar

Continuing from the previous “Tech 101” (October 2020) in Tech 102 we will look at rigging lighting for theatre – from reading and understanding a lighting plot, getting to know the types of fixtures at our disposal and exploring the process of putting fixtures onto lighting bars. Get to grips with the ‘bread and butter’ aspect of a technician’s job, learning the basic skills needed by all technicians, and understanding important elements of putting a show together. This masterclass is ideal for budding theatre or event technicians, and also emerging performers, directors and producers who want to understand more about putting a performance together and how lighting can play a part in this.

Thu 11 Feb 2021 Filming during lockdown – with Brett New & John Crooks 6pm – 7:30pm

Full details will be published shortly – the masterclass will feature a discussion about filming during restricted periods (such as lockdown or while in a tier system) and also give information and tips on guerilla filming on a low budget.

This masterclass is ideal for those interested in film and filming and emerging videographers looking to take the next step in their career.
