Plymouth creative, Gabi Marcellus-Temple, invites you to a jump on, jump off drawing activity for bus passengers to come across and for the avid doodlers to book onto.
Think of a giant, co-created consequences game of doodles, based on the journeys we all take on the same bus route. Each person can draw part of a journey e.g. the bus stop, the bus from inside or outside, something along the way like a bridge or building or even an event they took the bus to, then they pass on the sketch book to someone else and continue.
Timings
-
Gabi will begin the workshop at Moment's Cafe (bottom of New George Street next to the Plymouth City Council Shop along from WH Smith) at 1pm on Saturday 4 February
-
Catch Plymouth Citybus 20A from Royal Parade at 1:30pm (drawing as we travel)
-
Arrive at Ivybridge Town Hall at 2:30pm
-
Enjoy looking round Ivybridge for an hour and talk to Gabi about the drawings at Watermark Cafe
-
Catch the 20A from Ivybridge at 3:35pm, arriving back at Royal Parade at 4:55pm
This workshop is free and Plymouth Citybus have generously arrange for free bus travel during the event for all participants.
Note on timings:
Wheelchair accessible spaces on buses are limited. As Gabi is a wheelchair user, if the wheelchair space is already occupied on the 1:30pm service 20A journey, the group will be unable to travel. If this happens the workshop will move back to Moments Cafe and the group will catch a later 20A bus that day. While we appreciate this isn't ideal we can't know in advance if another wheelchair user will be travelling and we really appreciate the group having a flexible approach.
Attendee guidance / trigger warnings / safe space
Age Guidance: suitable for ages 16
Emotional / trigger warnings: non expected
Health warnings: we will be travelling by bus so there will be other members of the public travelling with us. If you'd feel more comfortable wearing a face covering you can do so.
Barbican Theatre is a safe space - safe to be who you are, regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, age, gender, identity, or sexual orientation.
About Your Workshop Leader
Gabi Marcellus - Temple
I’m Gabi - I’m a visual artist, writer and translator. I’m based over the bridge in Saltash, but I often work in Plymouth and nearly always get there on the bus! I’ve lived in and around Plymouth since I was sixteen - an alarmingly long time ago - and my two sons were born and raised here. I’m proud to call this extraordinary place my home!
Gabi's response to the Meet Me At The Sundial brief:
As a wheelchair user, my experience of the buses might be a little bit different to other people’s. I nearly always travel by bus as it’s convenient and environmentally friendly and I really enjoy chatting to the different people I meet. My project will be about sketches, writing and interviews for a podcast. My PA and I plan to start out by going on picnics round Plymouth based on the area - we’ll have ham sandwiches in Ham and battenberg cakes at Mountbatten to start off and then see where that leads us and who we meet on the way!
Tickets
This workshop is free (all materials provided), you just have to pay the bus fare.
