About The Masterclass

Joseph aims to change lives through the power of dance and for anyone who engages to be encouraged and empowered.
The dance  workshop will  focus on working with improvisation and creating original movement vocabulary, inspired by Joseph Toonga's latest performance Born to Exist and the Hip Hop foundations from which they work with. You will be introduced to street dance techniques, storytelling in dance, and choreographic tasks based on Joseph Toonga’s practice.

About Your Workshop Leader: Joseph Toonga
Joseph Toonga originates from Cameroon and was raised in East London. Joseph makes and performs dance productions relevant to the here and now which are embedded in Hip Hop and inspired by real life stories. His craftsmanship and signature choreographic style challenges conventions commonly used in Hip Hop dance and shifts audience perceptions by addressing racial stigmas and societal stereotypes.
Joseph has recently been appointed Emerging Choreographer with The Royal Ballet and in Autumn 2021 was Movement Director for Fair Play, A Bush Theatre Direction by Ella Road. Other commissions and achievements to date include:

Secret Cinema collaboration for premier of French film Les Miserables
Boston Conservatoire of Dance
National Youth Ballet/ Bundesjugendballett
Richard Alston Dance Company
Alongside extensive teaching and independent commissions, Joseph runs his dance company ‘Just Us Dance Theatre’, a collective founded 2007 where he has established an international Artis Development Programme in Brazil and the UK’s first annually running Hip Hop Apprenticeship company. He is also co-founder of artist-led hip-hop initiative ‘Artists4Artists’.

Tickets

Tickets are currently only available for collection from 1 hour before performances begin. They are not currently available for collection from the Box Office at any other times and postage is no longer available. Barbican Theatre recommends e-tickets which can be presented at the theatre on the date of your performance using a smart mobile device (or if you prefer can be printed out) E-tickets are more covid safe and are also much greener due to not being needed to be printed or posted.
