Creative Writing with Plymouth’s Laureate Of Words
For ages 12-25
In this 1 day session you’ll be led by Plymouth’s Laureate Of Words - Laura Horton.
The day will take you through a personal journey of creative writing processes and tasks to build your own voice and writing style.
Focus on your existing creative passions and experiment with a range of styles, techniques, and genres as you unlock your imagination.
Poems, spoken word or short stories it's up to you!!
Pay What You Decide
This is a Pay What You Decide workshop, which means you can decide what you pay to attend. We have set a minimum of £15 per course (we pay all our course leaders the ITC rate and this minimum fee will not even cover the cost of half their fee) but if you can afford to pay a little extra to ensure we can continue to offer such opportunities to young people we would be extremely grateful. There is no 'right' answer, we are not attempting to lead you to a specific figure. You can pay £15 per course or you can donate a little extra if you decide to (if you can afford it) by adding an additional value in the Donation box on the next screen when you checkout. From researching similar courses like this in the Plymouth / south west area we can see that it would usually cost £50 per day to attend

Free Places
We also have a number of bursaries (free places) for anyone for whom money is a barrier to them being able to join. There is no judgement and you'll not be asked to answer question after question after question.

Meet Your Workshop Leader: Laura Horton
Laura Horton
Plymouth playwright, facilitator and publicist Laura Horton is Plymouth's first ever Laureate of Words, for the two years 2021-22. In autumn 2020, Literature Works joined forces with Plymouth Culture and The Box to recruit a Laureate of Words for the city, picking up the baton from outgoing Poet Laureate, Thom Boulton.
As part of a creative partnership between Literature Works, Plymouth Culture and The Box, Laura will engage with a number of written and performance based commissions presented to her by various organisations across the city. She will also be running a series of public events and working with schools in the city to share the stories at the heart of Plymouth’s communities.
Laura was presented her first commission by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth’s Office in December 2020. She was inspired by an image from 1940 featured in a Plymouth Herald article, which shows Plymouth in the aftermath of one of a series of aerial attacks by the Luftwaffe.
