Performance Poetry/Spoken Word - Mondays 6pm-7.30pm, 13th Jan - 10th Feb with Kane John Mills

Whether you're totally new to Performance Poetry/Spoken Word, a hobbyist, or a Pro, join Kane John Mills for an exciting Short Course where you can take your relationship with the craft to a whole new level.

In an encouraging, welcoming, empowering space you'll be guided in the art of writing, creating, editing, analysing, curating, testing, sharing, and performing your own poetry.

In this bespoke, accessible course you can expect to...

* Develop/deepen your understanding of Spoken Word/Performance Poetry.

* Explore writing and performance techniques.

* Experiment with form.

* Unpack what works well and how to get out of your own head.

* Grow in confidence and comfort as you hone in on and enhance your individual unique poetic style and delivery, and ultimately own your words onstage.

About the Practitioner

Kane John Mills is a Spoken Word, Theatre, and Dance Artist who is passionate about using art to uplift, champion, & amplify marginalised and underrepresented voices, improve and change people’s lives, challenge societal norms, and highlight & fight injustice.

He has extensive experience as a Facilitator, Creator, and Performer, and for over a decade has locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally led provision across a wide variety of art forms independently and for many organisations/companies.

He has received Poetry commissions from the likes of Boat Poets, Apples & Snakes and Milk Poetry.

His practice and ethos is supportive, trauma-conscious, and driven by care, kindness, access, equity, imagination, collaboration, joy, and togetherness.
He always endeavours to create/facilitate a brave, encouraging, inclusive, judgement-free space where people feel comfortable to be creative, playful, uninhibited, and 100% their unapologetic selves.

Making Audio Plays - Wednesdays @ 7:30pm - 9:00pm, Wednesdays 15th Jan - 12th Feb with Jon Nash

How do you tell a great story through sound?

What is it like to act with just your voice?

Can you create a brilliant podcast drama in your own home?

 

Make exciting short audio plays over five weeks in this step by step class. You’ll explore how to tell stories for audio and podcasts, write your own plays, create your own sound effects, develop audio acting and microphone technique and finally record your own mini audio plays to share. 

This practical and creative workshop will playfully experiment with all elements from writing to acting to using recording software and editing your audio play to get it out into the world.

Jon is a playwright and theatre maker based in the South West. He won the BBC Radio Wiltshire Playwrite! Competition and was nominated for the International Children and Youth Radio Prize for his radio play ‘Telling Tales’. He has created and produced audio plays for Down Stage Write and is the co-host of the podcast Coffee and Cults. He teaches Writing For Performance at Plymouth University.

Contemporary Technique and Choreography - Mondays @  6:00pm- 7:30pm, 24th Feb - 24th March with Laura Cantliff

This is an open level contemporary dance class for all - whether you're an experienced dancer or if you’re new to moving. Each class will feature a series of exercises, phrases and creative tasks designed to be adaptable for your needs and support your new unique dance practice. Together we will explore and work towards a dance practice that serves and enriches us. Join me and have a boogie to some proper good tunes in a safe and relaxed atmosphere. 

These classes are led by Laura Cantliff. Laura is a dance artist, theatre practitioner and access coordinator based in the South West. She is also a final year performing arts Doctorate Candidate at The University of Plymouth, and her research is focused on neurodivergence and dance training. She is passionate about advocating for and celebrating the disabled community and was recently announced as a winner for the The Learning Disability and Autism Leaders List Awards by Dimensions UK in 2024. 

Laura specialises in inclusive performance and co-creation, and has worked with organisations such as Far Flung CIC, Assembleth Theatre, The Barbican Theatre, and Plymouth Dance to deliver fun and accessible workshops and training opportunities across the city.

Lights, Camera, Action: Practical Filmmaking - Wednesdays @ 7:30pm - 9:00pm, 26th Feb - 26th March

Gain hands-on experience with professional filmmaking equipment and learn industry-standard skills while creating a film as part of a collaborative team, taking on roles reflective of a real film set.

Whether you're interested in short films, music videos, advertisements or documentaries, your expert practitioner, with extensive experience across these areas, will guide you every step of the way.

This course is ideal if you want to explore something new or refine and apply your existing filmmaking skills in a practical setting.

There's an opportunity to use the full extent of Barbican Theatre’s studio capabilities or get out on location if the film needs it!

Using industry-grade cameras, lighting, and sound equipment, you'll have the opportunity to explore your creative vision without limits.

From pre-production (storyboarding, scripting, and shot lists) to production and post-production, you'll learn the entire filmmaking process. You'll also gain experience editing and bringing your film to life, culminating in a final screening of your work.
