Safeguarding Policy

It is the policy of Barbican Theatre, Plymouth to safeguard the welfare of all young people with which it works by protecting them from neglect and physical, sexual and emotional harm.

Barbican Theatre Plymouth strongly believes:
  • The welfare of a child and vulnerable groups are paramount; we have a responsibility to follow the 6 safeguarding principles enshrined within the Care Act of 2014:
    • Empowerment – Personalisation and the presumption of person-led decisions and informed consent.
    • Prevention – It is better to take action before harm occurs.
    • Proportionality – Proportionate and least intrusive response appropriate to the risk presented.
    • Protection – Support and representation for those in greatest need.
    • Partnership – Local solutions through services working with their communities. Communities have a part to play in preventing, detecting and reporting neglect and abuse.
    • Accountability – Accountability and transparency in delivering safeguarding.
  • All children and participants without exception have the right to protection from abuse regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality or beliefs.
  • All participants have the right to be involved in the outputs of Barbican Theatre Plymouth

All directors or employees of Barbican Theatre or contractors and volunteers who work with Barbican Theatre, Plymouth are responsible for putting this policy into practice at all times.

Code of behaviour

Each trustee, employee and volunteer has a responsibility to ensure that young people are protected from harm. It is the responsibility of all to ensure that:

  • Their behaviour is appropriate at all times and they provide a good example acceptable behaviour.
  • They recognise the position of trust in which they have been placed.
  • The relationships they form with the young people under their care are appropriate and professional.
  • They show respect and understanding of young people, and their safety and welfare, and conduct themselves in a way that reflects our principles.

It is the policy of Barbican Theatre, Plymouth that all employees, contractors and volunteers who will work with young people undergo an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Baring Service. Barbican Theatre, Plymouth will cover the costs of obtaining the Disclosure through its representatives.

The Barbican Theatre, Plymouth policy is set out in all contracts of employment and sub contractor contracts.

All staff, trustees and volunteers at Barbican Theatre Plymouth have a duty of care to all of our service users. This involves accurately and promptly reporting any concerns you have.

The key guidance for child protection is from Working Together to Safeguard Children (Department for Education, 2023). Which states:

“The guidance makes it clear that protecting children from abuse, neglect and exploitation requires cooperation across all agencies at all levels.”

All allegations or suspicions of abuse, no matter how insignificant they might seem, or when/where they occur, must be referred to our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Dulcie Fenton.
