In addition to weekly classes, we also offer specialist masterclasses throughout the year—one-off sessions led by industry professionals covering focused areas of theatre and performance.

FAQs

Who BT Adults for?

These classes are for adults aged 18 and over who are interested in exploring or developing their skills in theatre and performance. We welcome participants from all backgrounds and experience levels.

What’s the difference between ACTivate and EXCELerate?
  • ACTivate is designed for those new to drama or returning after a break. It’s relaxed, sociable, and focuses on building confidence and creativity.

  • EXCELerate is for those with prior acting or performance experience who want to work at a more advanced level, with a focus on skill refinement and ensemble work.

I’m 18—should I join the Youth or Adults classes?

If you're still in education or prefer a youth-led setting, you may feel more comfortable in the Barbican Theatre Youth programme.
If you’re looking for a more mature, independent environment with other adults, ACTivate or EXCELerate might be a better fit.

We can help you decide—feel free to get in touch or try a taster session.

Do I need previous performance experience?
  • ACTivate: No experience is needed—it's designed for beginners or those getting back into drama.

  • EXCELerate: Some previous experience or training is expected. You’ll be invited to attend a relaxed workshop session before joining.

Do I have to attend every week?
  • ACTivate is flexible. You can drop in if you can’t make every session.
  • EXCELerate benefits from regular attendance to build ensemble work, but we understand life happens—just keep us informed.
Are the classes accessible for people with additional needs?

Yes. We welcome adults with additional needs. Please fill in a short access form when booking so we can provide appropriate support and make reasonable adjustments.

Are there any performance opportunities?

Yes. Both classes may include informal sharings or showings depending on the term. EXCELerate may offer more structured performance opportunities, depending on the group’s progress.

How much do the classes cost?
  • £6 per session

  • Or £50 for a 10-week term (paid in advance)
