Uncensored: Narration & Spoken Word Creative Workshop

For ages 18+
Part of the Bad Sex Writing series of workshops for ages 18+...
Laura Horton will guide you through spoken work and narration techniques to bring the newly commissioned Bad Sex Writing  show to life.
Like if Letters Live and My Dad Wrote a Porno had a baby - get prepared to narrate a new piece of cheekily bad sex writing, then submit for narration by local performers and comedians in Laura's Bad Sex Writing Show.

Other workshops by Laura Horton this autumn at Barbican Theatre:
Bad Sex Writing Creative Workshop - Thur 21 October 6pm - 8pm (times TBC)
Have a go at some tongue in cheek, comedy romance writing inspired by ‘My Dad wrote a Porno’. Find ways to write viscerally about intimacy and write comically about sex...
This masterclass begins our search for the best / worst sex writers in the south west.  Join Plymouth's Laureate Of Words, Laura Horton, and theatre maker Leah Ingall to create engaging, funny and accessible writing about sex, for a show in November. Spend the time honing your text and then submit for narration by local performers and comedians in Laura's Bad Sex Writing Show.

About Your Workshop Leader

Laura Horton

Plymouth playwright, facilitator and publicist Laura Horton is Plymouth's first ever Laureate of Words, for the two years 2021-22. In autumn 2020, Literature Works joined forces with Plymouth Culture and The Box to recruit a Laureate of Words for the city, picking up the baton from outgoing Poet Laureate, Thom Boulton.
As part of a creative partnership between Literature Works, Plymouth Culture and The Box, Laura will engage with a number of written and performance based commissions presented to her by various organisations across the city. She will also be running a series of public events and working with schools in the city to share the stories at the heart of Plymouth’s communities.
Laura was presented her first commission by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth’s Office in December 2020. She was inspired by an image from 1940 featured in a Plymouth Herald article, which shows Plymouth in the aftermath of one of a series of aerial attacks by the Luftwaffe. Find out more about her creative process and read her short story ‘Roll out Plymouth’ – which responds to the brief: ‘Caring and supporting one another: exploring how the community of Plymouth comes together’
Laura has recently taken her new play Breathless to Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2022, to amazing critical acclaim. (produced with Theatre Royal Plymouth)

Covid 19 Safety
The health, safety and comfort of our audiences, colleagues and performers are very important to us.

Before you arrive

We have a number of measures in place to ensure your comfort and safety.
Enhanced hygiene procedures are in place which include thorough cleans between performances and our ReBels training sessions. We have increased the circulation of fresh air throughout the building so it might be cooler than you are used to. You may want to bring an extra layer, just in case. Hand sanitising stations are positioned throughout the public spaces for audience members and ReBels training members to use and we ask that you do so frequently.
We continue to monitor the latest guidance from the UK Government and the team here will continue to wear face coverings in all areas of the theatre.

When you arrive

Whilst we encourage members of the audience to continue to wear a mask we understand that more and more people are making the decision not to so we would like audiences to be aware that people sitting around them may not wear a mask throughout. If you are concerned about this please get in contact with our Audience Experience Manager Robyn who can discus options for seating that will help you feel more safe.
The Barbican team will all wear face coverings / shields (unless medically exempt) and are also regularly lateral flow tested. This includes our practitioners, core team, the team front of house and back stage.

Social Distancing

Barbican Theatre largely programmes one night performances, with a capacity of either 110 or 140. Due to this programming model at present we are unable to offer socially distanced performances. Please get in contact if you would like to discus seating options for any upcoming events and where possible we will find you an area in the auditorium with the most distance for other audience members.
