Have you ever wanted to make and parade with giant puppets?
Ever wondered what’s involved and how you make it come alive?
Ever wanted to knock on a second floor window, whilst still walking at ground level?

Barbican Theatre ReBels invite you to help us build and decorate puppets for a parade around the backalley service lanes in Keyham, Plymouth, on the evening of Thursday 20 May 2021 (dates of creative workshops below)

Our parade is designed to be watched by local residents from their homes and back gardens, and is about bringing some magic to peoples gardens and doorsteps. We did this in St Judes back in September 2020 and 1000 local residents watched the parade from their backdoor or gardens, and the reactions were amazing. Watch a film of the first parade here (created by Plymouth Culture)

We’ve been working with expert puppet makers Ruth Webb and Zenna Tagney (from the legendary Loswithiel Puppets)  who have built an amazing giant 7 meter tall Fisherman puppet. We want to make our second parade a totally local production as well so are inviting local residents from the Keyham area of Plymouth to help make and puppeteersome fishy friend puppets to accompany our giant fisherman. Working with Ruth and Zenna we’re holding two days of workshops that will be fun and very creative as you decorate and help bring character to our sea themed puppets – then if you want to you can puppeteer your creation in the parade!

We’re also excited to be joined by the expert puppet makers and pupeteers from Above Bounds – their FishGo Disco puppets will also be part of the parade along with our ReBels Puppet Group’s giant jellyfish!

Both the puppet making workshops, rehearsals and the parade will be socially distanced.

The puppet making workshops and start/finish of the parade are held at St Johnstone’s Sport & Social Club (on Saltash Road, Keyham PL2 2BE)

The workshops and performing in the parade are suitable for anyone aged 8 and above – encourage families to get involved (anyone aged under 12 must be accompanied by an adult) If you just want to come along to make the puppets but not be in the parade that’s completely up to you. Similarly if you don’t want to help make the puppets but would like to be a part of the parade we’d love to hear from you. We welcome families (with children aged 12+) who want to come along and create / perform together.

As these are socially distanced workshops spaces are limited and will be offered on a first come first served basis. Sign up to be a part of the workshops and/or the parade here:
