Lockdown update: Wed 6 Jan 2021

Following the announcement of England moving into a Tier 5 lockdown, these workshops for the Keyham community will be postponed until a later date in the spring (when Plymouth moves to Tier 3 or lower)

Have you ever wanted to make a 5 metre high puppet?
Ever wondered what’s involved and how you make it come alive?
Ever wanted to knock on a second floor window, whilst still walking at ground level?

Barbican Theatre ReBels invite you to help us build and decorate giant 5m and 7m tall puppets for a parade around the backalley service lanes in Keyham, Plymouth, on the evening of Thursday 21 January (dates of creative workshops below)

Our parade is designed to be watched by local residents from their homes and back gardens, and is about bringing some magic to peoples gardens and doorsteps. We did this in St Judes back in September 2020 and 1000 local residents watched the parade from their backdoor or gardens, and the reactions were amazing. Watch a film of the first parade here (created by Plymouth Culture)

We want to make our second parade a totally local production as well so are inviting local residents from the Keyham area of Plymouth to help make and puppeteer these giants. Working with expert puppet makers Ruth Webb and Zenna Tagney (from the legendary Loswithiel Puppets) the workshops will be fun and very creative as you decorate and help bring character to our sea themed puppets (and then bring them to life in the parade if you want to!)

Both the puppet making workshops and the performance will be socially distanced.

The puppet making workshops are held at Barbican Theatre, Castle Street, Plymouth PL1 2NJ. We will be providing free transport from outside St Johnstone’s Sport & Social Club to Barbican Theatre on the Saturday and Sunday. Pick up at 9:30am.

The music workshop and parade set up will be at St Johnstone’s Sport & Social Club (on Saltash Road, Keyham PL2 2BE)

Puppet Making Workshop Saturday 16 January 10am – 5pm (Barbican Theatre)
Puppet Making Workshop Sunday 17 January 10am – 5pm (Barbican Theatre)
Puppet Parade Music Workshop Wednesday 20 January 6pm – 8pm (St Johnstone’s Sport & Social Club)
Backalley Puppet Parade Thursday 21 January 5pm – 7pm (start at St Johnstone’s Sport & Social Club)

(the parade lasts around 45min-1hr but we need time to set up etc. The parade route will be publshed very soon!)

The workshops and parade are suitable for anyone aged 7 and above. If you just want to come along to make the puppets but not be in the parade that’s completely up to you. Similarly if you don’t want to help make the puppets but would like to be a part of the parade we’d love to hear from you. We welcome families who want to come along and create / perform together.

As these are socially distanced workshops spaces are limited and will be offered on a first come first served basis. Sign up to be a part of the workshops and/or the parade here:
