ReBels: ages 12 – 15

Details of our Spring 2021 term sessions will be published here from 4 December (current members of ReBels have been emailed details on 26 November so they can choose their sessions before they are opened to the public)

ReBels: what's NEW for 2020!

As we are still experiencing the affects and restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 global pandemic, there are naturally going to be some changes to our young people's training classes, to make sure everyone stays safe, happy and healthy.
Here is the Nitty Gritty:

Smaller groups in bigger spaces
You will be meeting in a smaller bubble of up to 15 people (including Practitioners) to make social distancing easier.  Barbican Theatre’s space is going to be too small for delivering socially distanced classes so we will be hiring bigger spaces in Plymouth (please see below - all of these Barbican Theatre Partner spaces are within the PL1 poscode in the city centre / Barbican area)

We know that seeing your friends is important and we want you to be able to work with your friends. So you can pick your groups. Each group will have a slightly different focus for the half term to help you and your friends try new stuff.

The six ages 12 - 15 groups will be project based e.g. comedy, puppetry, contemporary dance, hip hop and spoken word.

There will still be Theatre or Dance training in each project with experienced practitioners you know. However, these smaller groups give us an opportunity to try new things. During the creative time in each class there will be extra opportunities to learn cross overs like stage combat or beatbox poetry too.

Sept - Dec 2020

Sessions run on Monday and Tuesday evenings from Monday 28 September 2020. Members can attend more than one session (subject to their being spaces) which is still included in the £60 annual fee.

Mondays (from 28 September 2020)

5pm - 6:30pm What's Your Style? (Dance) with Guest Choreographers / Dancers & Lauren Pomfret @Barbican Theatre

Sessions will gives you the opportunity to encounter different dance styles, including hip hop  and contemporary, jazz, krumping and more. This is the place to learn a new style and experiment. Throughout the term there is the potential for guest dancers to come to sessions to teach other styles.

5pm - 6:30pm Text & Music (Theatre) with Charlotte Kransmo & Alex Hart @The Loft

Sessions will look at how plays can be enhanced with music. How does music and text interweave? How do they work with the same goals to create a performance? This is an opportunity for young people to learn how to bring a text to life.

7:30pm - 9pm Rhythm & Word (Dance) with Kadus Smith & Shaday Barrows @Barbican Theatre

In sessions we ask 'how do text and dance move together?' How can you heighten a dance performance with text and visa versa? This group experiments with the combination of spoken word and dance, developing skills in dance and creation of online text.

7:30pm - 9pm Online Stories (Theatre) with Zoe Bloss & Seb Berry @The Loft FULL

The internet is a powerful place to share your stories with the world. Online Stories will look to develop skills in acting and performing, whilst considering how these skills can be applied to create online performances. You will get the chance to experiment with lighting, camera angles, different performance styles and more.

Tuesdays (from 29 September 2020)

5pm - 6:30pm Comedy Sketches with Laura Doble & Sian Keen from Scratchworks Theatre Company (Theatre) @Barbican Theatre FULL

(to be added to the waiting list please complete your details on the form below)

ReBels members will develop a variety of skills and tools to create a number of short comedy sketches. Learning from the professional creative and touring experiences of the Scratchworks team, their creations can then be performed live or on camera.

5pm - 6:30pm Puppetry & Performance with Above Bounds (Theatre) with Victoria Horan & Nicole Redfern @Barbican Theatre

Puppetry will guide you through the animation of a puppet. There will be a chance to create a performance and be part of a puppetry parade at the end of the term. You will use your own imagination resourcefulness and acting skills to bring objects to life and animate a space.

Why We Exist...

We believe that young people's creativity has no limits or restrictions

How we do the Why...

You can't be what you can't see.

A young person should encounter endless different creative outlets and opportunities to help find the best way to express themselves. Without financial, social or cultural barriers.

What ReBels do...

We provide project focussed training groups that allow young people to experience and develop with mutiple artforms and styles, while focussing on one production or performance. We listen to our young people to find out what they want - if we don't already cover subjects or artforms they want that's how we find out and develop with and for them.

In order to ensure our young people are still able to engage with activities and their Practitioners we have launched B-Hive which is an online resource featuring videos of tutorials, challenges and activities suitable for all involved with Performance Training classes (as well as others who might just want to create or move while they are in isolation)
