Dan Matthews became a Barbican Theatre Trustee in 2017
Dan began his career in HR and Finance, working for the Department for Work and Pensions and Plymouth City Council. He then managed the HR and Payroll Team at Falmouth University before moving to the University of Plymouth Students’ Union (UPSU) to manage HR and Governance. Most recently, he has been promoted to the position of Director of Central Services (Finance, HR, Governance, Facilities and H&S) at UPSU.
Dan’s education was focused on Mathematics and Management, forming the basis of his unusual (but hopefully complementary!) skill set, offering both technical and people skills. Dan’s degree was in Mathematics, and he has undergraduate and postgraduate certificates in Leadership and Management, as well as a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management.
Dan’s most notable achievements include:
- Taking a leading role in developing UPSU to be a Gold standard Investor in People, supporting the organisation to achieve this level twice in a row (2014, 2017), placing UPSU in the top five employers in Plymouth
- Taking a leading role in the incorporation of UPSU (2017), ensuring a smooth, low-risk transition for the Trustees, organisation and staff
- Project managing the completion of a full set of Finance/Payroll operating procedures at Falmouth University (2011), mitigating the risk of staffing changes or other business continuity issues
Dan has a particular interest in employee engagement and promoting equality, having previously specialised in employment law and organisational change. He is keen to bring his corporate experience to his Trustee role at the Barbican Theatre.
