I was born in Kolkata, a city in the eastern part of India popular for its rich cultural heritage. From an early age, children in my city are introduced to the magical world of performing arts and I was no stranger to it. As early as 3 years of age, I was trained as an indian classical vocalist. While transitioning from toddling to walking, I started learning two forms of Indian classical dance (odissi and kathak).
The quote “Appreciation of cultural diversity is essential for our co-existence”- by Lailah Gifty Akita articulately defines Plymouth, my home for nearly a decade.
“Without music life would be a mistake”- Friedrich Nietzsche. As a trustee member of South Asian Society (SAas) of Devon and Cornwall I have been involved in various cultural events since 2017. I had the opportunity to be a part of Plymouth Respect Festival.
While attending the “Open Circle” event by Barbican Theatre I learnt how contemporary dance can be amalgamated seamlessly with global dance forms. This enthused me to learn the Spanish “Flamenco” and the Latin “Salsa” too.
I am currently working as a specialist doctor in Children’s and Adolescent Mental Health Service in Devon. I am also a lecturer in Plymouth Medical School. I work with children and young adults in my medical and academic professions. Over the years, I have learnt to recognise the strength of their voice. Listening to them and providing a space to unfurl their creative souls has always been my priority.
As a Mental Health professional, I have championed music therapy and am actively associated with it. I deeply appreciate the role played by Barbican Theatre to inspire artists to find their voice. It had provided me opportunities to explore my creativity. I strongly feel its time I contribute in providing an artistic cultural space for the next generation. As a member of the board, I genuinely believe that my experience as an artist, teacher and a mental health professional will constructively aid in building a culturally diverse but strong base for the future of Barbican Theatre.
